Sun Yat-sen first met Ōtsuki Kaoru in Japan while in exile. He was 42 when he proposed marriage to her father in 1901 (when she was 13), they were married in 1905 in Yokohama. Sun Yat-sen was still legally married to his first wife, Lu Muzhen, at the time. Sun left Japan for China shortly after the wedding to fight for the revolution, before Kaoru gave birth to their daughter, Fumiko Miyagawa, in 1906. He never returned to them. Due to a lack of money and support, Kaoru was eventually forced to give their daughter Fumiko up for adoption. Kaoru later remarried twice. The marriage was generally not publicized during Sun Yat-sens lifetime, but it is now widely acknowledged by both the governments of the China and the Republic of China (Taiwan).
