Genetic evidence suggests that garden snails in Ireland arrived there with humans. Mesolithic hunter gatherer societies almost certainly ate snails and the fact that they brought enough of them across the sea from mainland to start a sizeable population can suggest they also farmed them. (it is possible though less certain that bears were also introduced to the island by mesolithic hunter gatherers, that would be taking bear cubs and releasing them obviously, you cannot keep a bear in a basket the way you can keep snails...)
