How about raising a son? Can she manage that?

Catherine II came to power in 1762 after a palace coup against her husband Peter III and initially ruled from a position of real insecurity. Over the next 34 years she transformed Russia’s foreign policy defeating the Ottoman Empire annexing Crimea gaining permanent access to the Black Sea and taking part in the partitions of Poland. By the time of her death in 1796 Russia had firmly established itself as a major European great power.
