Why didnt they just go around India? Is Alexander stupid?
It must be hard to imagine soldiers growing tired and wanting to go home, when theyve spent the better part of years or even decades of their lives either besieging a city, marching dozens of miles to besiege another city, or getting caught up in a open field battle. This all during a time where roads were crude stony paths, water came from rivers and streams, food had to be either hunted for or taken directly from farms. All of this in mind, Id say its not a lifestyle any sane individual would want to keep up for their entire lives. Whilst some hardcore soldiers may have been down with it, the majority of any army would not have been such people.
