Not connected to WW2, but watched Pacinko recently and there is an episode set around the the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake (brilliant watch, really recommend it). In the aftermath of that Koreans were blamed with false rumours by the Japanese police/government and gave vigilante groups the express permission to kill Amy Koreans they could find. 6,000 people were killed mainly Koreans but also people misidentified as Koreans. Japanese right wing politicians deny it happened to this day.

I know every now and again we hear “what about allied warcrimes” which is fair but understand Japan has been incredibly stubborn to even admit to their wrongdoings. I think sometime in the 2000s they FINALLY admitted to it and showed some regret, but clearly not enough as people still go “nuh uh, we were just minding our business and got nuked” You can say “there were no absolute heroes in WW2” but let’s please NOT just claim amnesia on Japan’s actions when Germany has spent 70 years teaching their kids why the fuck what they did was wrong.

I will never forget when I went to the Yashkuni Shrine museum in the mid-2000s. It was the pinnacle of we did nothing wrong and they nuked us. ABCD Theory out the wazoo, no references at all to Japans crimes, very much more look at the pretty tank instead of focus on what it did. The example that has stood out to me all these years later was its description of the Rape of Nanking. I shit you not, it was one sentence long: Some civilians were harmed.
