Context: The famous Ötzi the Iceman was found in the Alps in 1991 and was at first thought to be the body of a deceased mountaineer. Or perhaps a soldier from the first or second World War. So a forensic team was dispatched to retrieve the body. They prodded the mummy and it’s belongings with ski poles and ice picks. They used a pneumatic drill to get through the ice, also damaging the body. After they got him out of the ice, he was forced into a coffin in order to transport him to a mortuary. And while on the mortuary slab, fungus began growing on his skin. It was only after they realized they had a 5000-year old body that they started properly treating the body and take an effort to preserve him.
