She had a habit of making outrageous statements, like when she said shed rather vote for Hitler than vote for Franklin (FDR) for a third term”, and a mere 4 years later she was lampooning the Republican candidate Dewey over his “pencil mustache.” Years later she chatted it up with the Kennedys, and once told LBJ that she intentionally wore an enormous hat so that he couldn’t kiss her. Oh yeah, and there’s the fact that she’s kind of sorta responsible for Nixon getting back into politics by convincing him to not give up after his 1960 loss. Years later in 1972, she was recorded in the Nixon White House tapes panning George McGovern in a conversation with Nixon. She met Gerald Ford, though declined to meet Carter. Regardless of your opinion on her, it is undeniably remarkable for someone to remain THAT relevant for nearly 80 years.
