Rwandan genocide was absolutely horrific partly for that reason. Civilian participation... to the max. Militias made up of neighbors killing neighbors. The Nazis tried to sanitize it and pretend to hide it... everybody knew what was going on, but it was going on on the other side of that wall, outside town, and you had your own family to worry about so you could turn away... Not that either one is right. There are few statements more glaringly obvious than genocide is wrong. But yeah, thats why it happened so fast in Rwanda. Everybody was either a victim, a perpetrator, or hiding for their lives. It was messy and nobody was trying to pretend it wasnt happening; it was a civil war, not lets pretend these are criminals and were only taking them to prison. I remember that year my grandparents didnt let me watch the news with my grandfather the way I normally did. I think they didnt want me to see the reports from Rwanda. Its kind of understandable. I was in my early teens, and I guess they wanted to protect me from the idea that something that horrible could exist in the world. I had already read Anne Franks diary and studied the Holocaust and all that by that age, of course. But grandparents are protective.
Whats worse? Denying an entire crime against humanity to fit your own agenda or acknowledging and feeling proud of it?
