The War of the Bucket (1325): Peak Historical Pettiness. > Basically, the Italian city-states of Bologna and Modena absolutely hated each other (classic Pope vs. Holy Roman Emperor turf war). The legend goes that some soldiers from Modena snuck into Bologna, stole an oak bucket from a city well, and Bologna was so deeply offended they declared war to get it back. The reality? They were already fighting, but Modena won the Battle of Zappolino, chased the Bolognese army all the way back to their city gates, and then stole the bucket from a well just to flex on them. Thousands of people died. The kicker? Modena still has the bucket on display in a museum today just to keep trolling Bologna 700 years later.
