When a thing is just common knowledge, no one bothers to write it down. For example, in the 18th and 19 century, there used to be a third shaker besides salt and pepper. Since it was so clear what it.was, no one actually bothered to write what they used it for. Some speculate it was sugar.
I genuinely think historians have this (and i dont what to call it) bias that any historical artifact that survived has to be something important, for all we know this could just be some art with no meaning at all but historians need this to be something profound about whatever just like those dicks on the Hadrian wall they have difficulties conceiving its just bored soldier being bored and dudes being dudes no it has to be some sort of fertility ritual or have some deep meaning.
