His version leaned hard into Cold War vibes. It featured the Weyland-Yutani Corporation going head-to-head with a rival communist faction called the Union of Progressive Peoples (UPP)... basically *Space Soviets*. Both sides were trying to weaponize the Xenomorph as part of an interstellar arms race. Very on-brand for the era. The studio was into it. The script was coherent, thematically rich, and had a cool dystopian flair. But then… history happened. The Berlin Wall fell in 1989. The Soviet Union was collapsing. And by the early ’90s, the Cold War was *over*. Suddenly, the whole “Space Communists vs. Evil Capitalists” thing felt dated and irrelevant to studio execs. So they scrapped it. And that’s when Alien 3 went into full-blown development hell. They cycled through multiple scripts, tones, and concepts. Everything from monks on a wooden planet, bio-weapons labs, prison planets, you name it. Eventually, David Fincher got dragged in with no finished script and a production already underway. The result? A bleak, messy, depressing film that killed off beloved characters from Aliens in the opening credits and left everyone wondering, “*Wait… what was the point of all that?*” Yeah. turns out, when the Cold War ended, it didn’t just change the world… it also helped ruin Alien 3.
