Context: The place name Philadelphia came from the Ancient Greek adjective φιλάδελφος(philadelphos), which is itself composed of the root φιλ- from φιλία(philiā) love, and the root ἀδελφ- from ἀδελφός(adelphos)/ἀδελφή(adelphē) brother/sister. Thus philadelphos means brother-loving or sibling-loving. Note that Ancient Greek has multiple words translatable to love, among which philiā can mean both sexual and non-sexual love. The city in the U.S. was named by William Penn, a Quaker who faced religious persecution in England. He named the city brotherly love, signifying religious freedom and tolerance. The city in Turkey (modern day Alaşehir) was named after Attalus II Philadelphus, who, after the presumed death of his brother in a battle, became king of Pergamon and married the widowed queen. But once his brother returned, he willingly divorced the queen and ceded back his power, thus earning the epithet. The city was named in his honor by his brother Eumenes II. The city in Jordan (modern day Amman) was named by Ptolemy II Philadelphus, the second Pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt, who began the incestuous tradition of the dynasty by marrying his sister, thus earning the epithet. He named the city and a town in Egypt after himself, making them the earliest places to bear the name Philadelphia.
