Uncle Sam got tired of producing, distributing & supplying different ammo to different planes in different places. Logistically, its a nightmare. A unified ammo makes all of it a no-brainer. Plus its just a perfect caliber for planes. Its light enough to have a good amount of ammo, but heavy enough to chomp & stomp whatever you point it at. Its anti-infantry. Anti-vehicle. Anti-plane. Its got range. Its got accuracy. Whats not to love?

.50 was a good caliber for WW2, especially vs Japan, it was also easy logistically and having the same trajectory for all guns is good. 20mm became the US standard after that for a good reason though.
