The first two shuttle launches had a white external tank because it was painted. NASA later realized the paint added about 600 pounds of unnecessary weight, so they removed it and left the foam insulation exposed. The famous orange tank everyone remembers was basically the result of engineers trying to squeeze a little more payload into orbit.
This orange foam sure looks beautiful, lets hope chunks of it dont randomly fall off and completely destroy the heat shield the crew needs to survive.
