Ney famously promised to bring Napoleon back “in an iron cage.” Instead, when he met Napoleon near Grenoble, the troops sent to arrest him defected en masse, and Ney soon joined him. Napoleon’s personal charisma, shared revolutionary-era loyalty, and widespread discontent with the Bourbon Restoration made resistance collapse almost without a fight.
