I have always thought that the depiction of Persians in popular culture is unfair. I mean if you look at the Jewish external books, for example, you’d see that from a purely religious standpoint, Cyrus the Great fits all the criteria of a messiah, as he returned the jews from exile, rebuilt the Temple, and brought peace to the land, at least for some time. The Persian Empire also had a relatively efficient bureaucracy
My favorite part is after the second Persian incursion into Greece a lot of the Greeks ended up fighting for the Persians as mercenaries.
