France expected an independent US to be a hardline anti-British ally, and so felt betrayed when America immediately went back to trading with Britain after the war and the two maintained semi-decent relations. It was also kind of wild how little animosity the British felt toward America, they just never really held it against the US. And in fact when George Washington finally died the Royal Navy lowered their flags to half mast out of respect.
