The history behind black men being appointed as slave breeders in Brazil is linked to the brutal practice of using enslaved men and women for systematic reproduction to maintain and increase the slave population. In Brazil during slavery, particularly in the 19th century, some enslaved men who were considered the strongest and healthiest were put in the role of breeding stock to father children with enslaved women. This was done to generate a new generation of slaves with favorable traits for labor. Women were forcibly made to become pregnant continuously, and their babies were often taken away soon after birth to be sold as property. This practice was poorly documented and largely hidden, partly because it was illegal and because many records were destroyed after slavery abolition. However, oral accounts and remaining census and birth records on slave estates confirm the existence of such breeding farms. A noted case is of farms in Paraíba and Rio de Janeiro, known locally for systematically using enslaved people for reproduction. One notable figure was Roque Jose Florencio, a large and strong enslaved man forced into fathering over 200 children to create a strong labor force, symbolizing this cruel exploitation. This horrific practice was a covert but integral part of the slave system in Brazil that extended across the country until abolition in 1888.
