Large parts of France and Belgium had been absolutely devestated by the war while most of Germany hadnt been directly damaged. It kind of made sense at the time then that Germany should pay a lot of reparations to repair the damage theyd done.
This myth/meme has to die asap because its literally part of nazi propaganda that somehow made it into our collective consciousness. Proportionally to the duration of the conflict and the scale of the devastation inflicted on Ententes territories, the treaty of Versailles was actually too lenient compared to other peace treaties, especially when Germany was on the winning side (cough 1871 cough)
