Context: In 1966 Australian captain Peter Warner sailed past the uninhabited island of ‘Ata. He had just been refused lobster fishing rights in Tongan waters and was returning home via a detour to still catch some fish. While passing they spotted a few patches of burned land, odd for such tropic environment. After sailing closer to investigate his lookout heard human voices and six boys with long hair jumped into the water and swam to the boat. When pulled out of the water they claimed to be schoolboys from Tonga that ran away and ended up stranded on the island for 15 months. Captain Warner refused to believe them but contacted Tonga nonetheless and he got confirmation that, indeed, the boys were lost and presumed dead for 15 months! It turned out the group ran off from their strict boarding school and attempted to go to Fiji with a “borrowed” fishing boat and not much experience at sea. After falling asleep they were caught in a storm and were adrift for 8 days until they stranded on ‘Ata. There they ended up erecting a small comune with vegetable gardens, a gym, a water reservoir and a continuous bonfire to try and attract ships. They even made an instrument and when one of them broke his leg, they splinted it after which it healed perfectly according to a doctor. If two boys fought the others would just separate them and let them cool off on opposite sides of the island, after 4 or so hours they would join together again and say sorry. After their return they ofcourse were met by their overjoyed parents… and the police, because they still stole a boat. The captain however bailed them out and after failing to sell their stories to tv-makers they were taken on by captain Peter to serve on his newest ship; the ‘Ata. In the end captain Peter Warner got his fishing rights, new friends for life and a profound hope in the good nature of humankind. So basically Jules Vernes Two Years Vacation IRL
Fun fact: Lord of the Flies actually takes place over the course of YEARS. When the boys snapped and went Lord-of-the-Flies, enough time had passed over a time-skip that their clothes had become rags and were in tatters. Even the fucking psychopath child just chilled with the others for that long, and it only went down to shit because they saw a plane crash + a dead pilot and thought demons were after their hides.
Printed on demand by Printify. Ships from the US or UK depending on location.
