The Thebans staying till the end probably was against their own will. They were there almost like hostages of the Hellenes because of their unreliable home city (which sent water and earth to the Great King). If this was the case (which we don’t know for sure, it’s only one of the explanations), that’s hardly a heroic feet in my opinion.
