By 12th of September (the very edge of the campaign season) the Ottomans barely had more resources than the defenders of the city. Even flour and other essentials ran out days or weeks ago. The whole countryside was stripped bare for dozens of kilometers of any food, horses and pack animals were dying of starvation, ammunition was running low. The dysentery and other diseases by this point took more lives than the actual fighting. Desertions became commonplace. Against all advice Kara Mustafa chose to stay being sure that he can take the city. In the very early morning, Austrian Imperial infantry and the Saxons under Charles V, Duke of Lorraine engaged the Ottoman forces on the left flank in neighboring villages in brutal melee, securing Nussberg for artillery positions. Swabian, Bavarian, Franconian infantry under Prince Waldeck in the center fought heavy positional battles in villages turned into strongpoints, securing them by afternoon. The right wing was secured by King John III Sobiesky, Polish infantry fought hard and secured the high ground, overlooking the Ottoman camp. At this point (in the late afternoon), the Ottoman forces were wavering, barely holding it together after a day of heavy fighting, thus the decision was made to keep up the momentum, committing the cavalry. The winged hussars arrived, breaking the remaining resistance, routing the remaining forces, turning the day from a simple defeat into a catastrophe that shook the very foundation of the Ottoman warmachine for decades to come, losing almost all of Hungary to Leopold I in the ensuing war that lasted until 1699.
