I thought Vesuvius destroyed multiple towns in the vicinity: Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabiae. Obviously not all the people were killed, but saying only 20% of one town was killed is not true either.
Mount Vesuvius isnt remembered because it is the worst thing ever, it is remembered because it happened at the heart of a massive empire that was really good at record keeping. It was also one of the first events of its type that this culture had EVER seen, they didnt even have a word for volcano before Vesuvius.
