Dude just had insane liquidity. In the age of monarchies where all the land was (technically) owned by the king, yeah damn, I’m sure a lot of kings were “rich” but it was all tied up in permanent obligations to vassals and such. Same with slave empires like Delhi. Mansa Musa was running a huge surplus, and that made him look richer than he was.
Musa Is great wealth came from his personal ownership of the insanely rich gold mines of the Empire of Mali, which accounted for an estimated 1/4th to 1/3rd of global gold production in the Pre-Columbian Era, and as much as 50% of global gold production in the 13th century. (Some of his wealth also came from salt production, but his exclusive ownership of what were then the worlds most productive gold mines was the biggest factor.)
