Roman von Ungern-Sternberg was a warlord of the Russian Civil War whose worldview seemed borrowed from several centuries at once. A fanatical monarchist who believed the modern world was in decline, he mixed imperial ambition, anti-communism, apocalyptic mysticism, and a fascination with Mongolian and Tibetan Buddhism into a deeply eccentric personal ideology. In 1920–1921, while much of the world was entering the age of mass politics, mechanized warfare, and modern nation-states, Ungern was leading cavalry charges across the Asian steppe and attempting to restore traditional monarchies by force. His brief rule in Mongolia earned him a reputation that ranges from liberator to tyrant depending on the source. Because he doesnt fit comfortably into categories like conservative, fascist, nationalist, or religious zealot, historians often describe him as one of the most unusual figures of the 20th century—a man who seemed to be fighting for a world that had already disappeared.

you know what, I think he was born just in time to be a character in The Kaiserreich

There’s nothing confusing about him, and of the schizo russian civil war people he’s not even close to the most interesting. That would probably be Kazembek
