During the Spanish Civil War, Franco promoted a narrative of Catholic–Muslim unity against the godless atheism of the Republicans; he also led a narrative of brotherhood and equality between Spaniards and Moroccans. In fact, the October 1942 issue of Foreign Affairs went so far as to say of Francoist commanders, They never denied that they had promised white women to the Moors when they entered Madrid. Republicans countered this with the Moorish hordes narrative, alleging that Francos army was filled with Muslim rapists.The first poster on the top right reads, Spanish women in Fascist regions give birth to Black babies! and The Spain Franco wants!The second one reads Invasion, with images of Moorish soldiers.¡Ay Carmela!, a popular song among the Republicans, includes the line, Luchamos contra los Moros (We struggle against the Moors).
