Context: in 1296, Alonso Pérez de Guzmán—also known as Guzmán el Bueno (the Good)—was a Castilian nobleman who defended the Spanish town of Tarifa against an army of Moors. Guzmáns son was a hostage of the Moors, and they threatened to cut his throat if Guzmán didnt yield the town. According to legend, Guzmán the Good threw down his knife for the besiegers to use on his son. After the siege was broken, Guzmán was rewarded by the Crown of Castile, and theres a statue of him in Tarifa.

Bastardi! You think you can threaten me? Ill give you NOTHING! You want my children? Take them! I have the instrument to make more!

He had no guarantee that they wouldnt kill his son, him and all his men anyway so this is rational decision if your enemy isnt trustworthy and people who are eager to kill hostages usually arent.
