War is always hell for everyone involved except for the ones that started it.
There were no “good guys” in the Vietnam War. Both North and South Vietnam were led by ruthless dictators. Le Duan’s regime embraced the violence and repression of the old Stalinists, while Diem and the Nhus openly embraced repression and corruption across all levels of society. The NLF (Viet Cong) used extreme violence and terror to advance its goals, oftentimes targeting ordinary civilians and the Montagnard (Hmong) indigenous in the Central Highlands. Both the PAVN and ARVN were prone to committing atrocities, abusing and executing POWs or civilians. My Lai was just one of many massacres. Operation Phoenix, the Free Fire Zones, and Rolling Thunder killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. Besides the infamous atrocities committed by American aircraft and ground troops, ARVN and South Korean ROK units also perpetrated atrocities in their war. The price was 2,000,000 Vietnamese lives, most between 1965 and 1975.
this is implying that the average vietnamese person would view the two sides equivalently. generally the communists had much more popular support than the saigon regime, which was seen as collaborationist in the vein of the japanese and the french.
