Unit 731 To determine the treatment of frostbite, prisoners were taken outside in freezing weather and left with exposed arms, periodically drenched with water until frozen solid. The arm was later amputated; the doctor would repeat the process on the victims upper arm to the shoulder. After both arms were gone, the doctors moved on to the legs until only a head and torso remained. The victim was then used for plague and pathogens experiments.[111] A former unit 731 member testified: As soon as the symptoms were observed, the prisoner was taken from the cell and into the dissection room...he was strapped down, still screaming frightfully. One of the doctors stuffed a towel into his mouth, then with one quick slice of the scalpel he was opened up. Witnesses at vivisections report that the victim usually lets out a horrible scream when the cut is made, and the voice stops soon after.[112] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_war_crimes#Human_experimentation_and_biological_warfare

Im sick of people pretending like Unit 731 produced anything of scientific worth. None of the data produced by Unit 731 was worth anything. Besides the obvious lack of ethical constraints, the Japanese also did not have any sort of methodology or scientific approach to their studies. It was cruelty for its own sake under a laughably thin pretense of scientific learning. They did not apply any controls, were inconsistent at best in terms of data collection, and did little to apply their experiments to actual real world situations. After the war, when the US negotiated commuted sentences and amnesty for administrators and scientists involved in the program what they obtained was deemed to be of no use. Some limited data on frostbite was incorporated into Air Force projections for pilots which went down over Siberia in a theoretical war with the Soviet Union, but that data was obtained from \*Nazi\* scientists who did their own frostbite experiments. While the Nazi unethical experiments shared many of the same issues as Unit 731, they were conducted under a semblance of contemporary scientific methodology. Even then, there is no treasure trove of unethically sourced data that has been unused. There were some minor findings the US Army and Air Force incorporated, and the rest of it has sat in US files since.
