The thing that made lances take a sabbatical from the battlefield was not guns: armor could stand up to the guns of the time. Rather, it was that the training and tactics for integrated pike-and-shot formations got too good at countering cavalry charges. As such, everyone except Poland gave up on lancers. Poland, however, instead used giant, hollow, 21~ lances that could outrange pikes. Then, because there werent lancers to defend against, pikes got replaced by more guns but with bayonets. Then, during the Napoleonic wars, Napoleons Polish lancers impressed everyone so much that everyone started commissioning lancers again. They remained effective until machine guns in WW1 ruined things.
