Dr. Lind knew lemon juice worked, but not why. They assumed lime (from the British West Indies) would work as well as (Imported) lemons, due to acidity. They were wrong. Scurvy reappeared. TLDR, limeys should have used lemons.
Notably, Grog (Your rum ration mixed with water to sterilise it, mixed with lemon juice for vitamin C, and mixed with your sugar ration for flavour) is also incredibly delicious and refreshing. I use lemon cordial and a shot of Kraken mixed with ice water.
