In the Iliad, after Patrocluss death, Achilles wishes Briseis had died when he sacked her city and slaughtered her husband and brothers, as Patroclus would not have died in that case. Furthermore, post-Homeric sources such as Ovids Heroides show how little Achilles cared for Briseis as a person, reflecting how extremely miserable Briseis felt at being treated by Achilles as if her life meant nothing. On the other hand, Patroclus is Achilles childhood friend. Depending on the source, they had a close friendship, a familial one (since according to some genealogies they were cousins), or even a romantic one (although this is post-Homeric). Patroclus was genuinely important to Achilles, and his dying is what pushes Achilles to his limit, to the point of considering suicide (and symbolically he does, for he knew that if he killed Hector his death would come soon after, at the hands of Paris avenging his sibling). According to post-Homeric sources, Achilles never reunited with Briseis to be with her in Elysium, but with Medea, showing again how little Achilles cared for his war prize beyond his pride, whom we still see mourning her husband Mynes in the Iliad, also pointing out that Briseis saw another man as her true love, not Achilles.
