This isnt to dunk on the abbasid era scholars since everyone did this but I found it funny. Combining most of the estimates given from abbasid era scholars from major battles ( there are a lot of semi major and minor battles were the Sassanids still somehow raise at least 50k amount of troops) We get around 600~700k amount of soldiers deployed from 632~642 AD. Although 500k of it is between 632~636 AD. Their (sassanid) entire invasion force of the roman empire in 602 AD was 120k split into 3 armies of 40k btw. Recorded by contemporary Armenian, Byzantine sources like Sebeos. This are the same guys who sent only 10k to stop Heraklius at Nineveh in 627 AD. Khosrow wanted Rahzadh to suffer I guess.
People see these numbers. Two things: 1. Old period army numbers are almost always crazy exaggerations 2. Most (not all) armies of the time for this era and especially the sassy bois consisted of a core of professional soldiers and nobles and a shitload of barely trained poorly equipped chaff that existed to hold a line while the important guys (Calvary, heavy infantry) won the battles. So, numbers don’t tell the whole story. Especially here
