I mean the Scottish were considered white, all Britons were. But Irishmen were seen as dirty Catholics, so that was the main reason. The Spanish were greasers, so were the Portuguese, and the Finns and Estonians were seen Laplanders. So, they saw only Celto-Germanic peoples as white. Which has some phenotypical truth, but is kind of funny now.

It was genuinely White against Whites as much as it was White against Black. Look up Ku Klux Klan discrimination against Irish, Scots, Italians, Slavs, Catholics, etc.
